Onrush is the upcoming arcade racer from the ex-Evolution Studios team (now working under Codemasters) which have brought us the amazing WRC and Motorstorm series in years gone by.
Such was the strength of these series, it comes as no surprise to learn that Onrush’s development draws more than a little inspiration from them. In particular, the Motorstorm environments were clearly used as a template of sorts when constructing the locations found in Onrush.
Indeed, the title’s locations mimic Motorstorm in that they provide multiple routes which cater to the strengths of particular vehicle classes.
“The gameplay of these tracks is dynamic and driven by the players, they’re filled with loads of routes and opportunities to perform takedowns, shake off your attackers or simply put together a high-speed combo of stunts and boost-fuelled action,” explained game director Paul Rustchynsky to Redbull recently.
“Each track has multiple routes; some routes are low, central and direct so faster. Some vehicles are more nimble than others when carving their way through the landscape, but each route offers different situations and opportunities for players to exploit,” he continued.
Onrush is certainly looking to shake up the racing genre with an approach which has elements more in common with titles outside the genre. It’s so different in fact, that the game does away with the finishing line altogether in favour of an objective-based experience which aims to keep you in the thick of the action at all times.
“The game’s also designed so the next most epic thing you can do is only seconds away. This approach means that there are huge opportunities for stringing together some impressive points scores, and in this way it does have a little in common with the likes of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. Each game mode will allow you to rack up points in different ways, some with a focus on combos and some not. It all depends on which game mode you’re in,” stated Rustchynsky.
More and more details on Onrush are slowly being revealed (you can view the pre-order goodies here) as we get ever closer to its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launch date of June 5, so check back soon for more.
